100 Bible Facts Concerning the Sabbath

WHY keep the Sabbath day? What is the object of the Sabbath? Who made it? When was it made, and for whom? Which day is the true Sabbath? Many keep the first day of the week, or Sunday. What Bible authority have they for this? There is now a growing count of over 500 denominations in the world that keep the seventh day, or Saturday. What Scripture have they for that? Here are the facts about both days, as plainly stated in the Word of God.

1. After working the first six days of the week in creating this earth, the great God rested on the seventh day. (Genesis 2:1.3.)

2. This stamped that day as God's rest day, or Sabbath day, as Sabbath day means rest day. To illustrate: When a person is born on a certain day, that day thus becomes his birthday. So when God rested upon the seventh day, that day became His rest, or Sabbath, day.

3. Therefore the seventh day must always be God's Sabbath day. Can you change your birthday from the day on which you were born to one on which you were not born? No. Neither can you change God's rest day to a day on which He did not rest. Hence the seventh day is still God's Sabbath day.

4. The Creator blessed the seventh day. (Genesis 2:3.)

5. He sanctified the seventh day. (Exodus 20:11.)

6. He made it the Sabbath day in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:1-3.)

7. It was made before the fall; hence it is not a type; for types were not introduced till after the fall.

8. Jesus says it was made for man (Mark 2:27), that is, for the race, as the word man is here unlimited; hence, for the Gentile as well as for the Jew.

9. It is a memorial of creation. (Exodus 20:11; 31:17.) Every time we rest upon the seventh day, as God did at creation, we commemorate that grand event.

10. It was given to Adam, the head of the human race. (Mark 2:27; Genesis 2:1-3.)

11. Hence through him, as our representative, to all nations. (Acts 17:26.)

12. It is' not a Jewish institution, for it was made 2,300 years before ever there was a Jew.

13. The Bible never calls it the Jewish Sabbath, but always "the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." Men should be cautious how they stigmatize God's holy rest day.

14. Evident reference is made to the Sabbath and the seven-day week all, through the patriarchal age. (Genesis 2:1-3; 8:10,12; 29:27-28. etc.)

15. It was a part of God's law before Sinai. (Exodus 16:4, 27-29.)

16. Then God placed it in the heart of His moral law. (Exodus 20:1-17.) Why did He place it there if it was not like the other nine precepts, which all admit to be immutable?

17. The seventh-day Sabbath was commanded by the voice of the living God. (Deuteronomy 4:12,13.)

18. Then He wrote the Commandment with His own finger. (Exodus 31:18.)

19. He engraved it in the enduring stone, indicating its imperishable nature. (Deuteronomy 5:22.)

20. It was sacredly preserved in the ark in the holy of holies. (Deuteronomy 10:1-5.)

21. God forbade work upon the Sabbath, even in the most hurrying times. (Exodus 34:21.)

22. God destroyed the Israelites in the wilderness because they profaned the Sabbath. (Ezekiel 20:12-13.)

23. It is the sign of the true God, by which we are to know Him from false gods. (Ezekiel 20:20.)

24. God promised that Jerusalem should stand forever if the Jews would keep the Sabbath (Jeremiah 17:24-25.)

25. He sent them into the Babylonish captivity for breaking it. (Nehemiah 13:18.)

26. He destroyed Jerusalem for its violation. (Jeremiah 17:27.)

27. God has pronounced a special blessing on all the Gentiles who will keep it. (Isaiah 56:6, 7.)

28. This is in the prophecy, which refers wholly to the Christian dispensation. (See Isaiah 56.)

29. God has promised to bless all who keep the Sabbath. (Isaiah 56:2.)

30. The Lord requires us to call it "honourable". (Isaiah 58:13.) Beware, ye who take delight in calling it the. "old Jewish Sabbath," "a yoke of bondage," etc.

31. After the holy Sabbath has been trodden down "many generations," it is to be restored in the last days. (Isaiah 58:12-13.)

32. All the holy prophets kept the seventh day.

33. When the Son of God came, He kept the seventh day all His life. (Luke 4:16; John 15:10.) Thus He followed His Father's example at creation. Shall we not be safe in following the example of both the Father and the Son?

34. The seventh day is the Lord's Day. (See Revelation 1:10; Mark 2:28; Isaiah 58:13; Exodus 20:10.)

35. Jesus was Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28), that is, to love and protect it, as the husband is the lord of the wife, to love and cherish her (1 Peter 3:6.)

36. He vindicated the Sabbath as a merciful institution designed for man's good. (Mark 2:23-28.)

37. Instead of abolishing the Sabbath, He carefully taught how it should be observed. (Matthew 13:1-13.)

38. He taught His disciples that they should do nothing upon the Sabbath day but what was "lawful" (Matthew 12:12.)

39. He instructed His apostles that the Sabbath should be prayerfully regarded forty years after His resurrection. (Matthew 24:20.)

40. The pious women who had been with Jesus carefully kept the seventh day after His death. (Luke 23:56.)

41. Thirty years after Christ's resurrection, the Holy Spirit' expressly calls it "the Sabbath day,"(Acts 13:14.)

42. Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, called it the "Sabbath day" in A.D. 45. (Acts 13:27.) Did not Paul know? Or shall we believe modern teachers, who affirm that it ceased to be the Sabbath at the resurrection of Christ?

43. Luke, the inspired Christian historian, writing as late as A.D. 62, calls it the "Sabbath day." (Acts 13:44.)

44. The Gentile converts called it the Sabbath. (Acts 13:42.)

45. In the great Christian council, A.D. 49. In the presence of the apostles and thousands of disciples, James calls it the "Sabbath day." (Acts 15:21.)

46. It was customary to hold prayer meetings upon that day. (Acts 16:13.)

47. Paul read the Scriptures in public meetings on that day. (Acts 17:2-3.)

48. It was his custom to preach upon that day. (Acts 17:2-3.)

49. The Book of Acts alone gives a record of his holding eighty-four meetings upon that day. (See Acts 13:14, 44; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4, 11.)

50. There was never any dispute between the Christians and the Jews about the Sabbath day. This is proof that the Christians still observed the same day that the Jews did.

51. In all their accusations against Paul, they never charged him with disregarding the Sabbath day. Why did they not, if he did not keep it?

52. But Paul himself expressly declared that he had kept the law. "Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all." Acts 25:8. How could this be true if he had not kept the Sabbath?

53. The Sabbath is mentioned in the New Testament fifty-nine times, and always with respect, bearing the same title it had in the Old Testament, "the Sabbath day."

54. Not a word is said anywhere in the New Testament about the Sabbath's being abolished, done away, changed, or anything of the kind.

55. God has never given permission to any man to work upon it. Reader, by what authority do you use - the seventh day for common labor?

56. No Christian of the New Testament, either before or after the resurrection, ever did ordinary work upon the seventh day. Find one case of that kind, and we will yield the question. Why should modern Christians do differently from Bible Christians?

57. There is no record that God has ever removed His blessing or sanctification from the seventh day.

58. As the Sabbath was kept in Eden before the fall, so it will be observed eternally in the new earth after the restitution. (Isaiah 66:22-23.)

59. The seventh-day Sabbath was an important part of the law of God, as it came from His own mouth, and was written by His own finger upon stone at Sinai. (See Exodus 20.) When Jesus began His work, He expressly declared that He had not come to destroy the law. "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets." Matthew 5:17

60. Jesus severely condemned the Pharisees as hypocrites for pretending to love God, while at the same tune they made void one of the Ten Commandments by their tradition. The keeping of Sunday is only a tradition of men.

Forty Bible Facts Concerning the First Day of the Week

1. The very first thing recorded In the Bible is work done on Sunday, the first day of the week. (Genesis l: l-5.) The Creator Himself did this. If God made the earth on Sunday, can it be wicked for us to work on Sunday?

2. God commands men to work upon the first day of the week. (Exodus 20.8-11.) Is it wrong to obey God?

3. None of the patriarchs ever kept it.

4. None of the holy prophets ever kept it.

5. By the express command of-God, His holy people used the first day of the week as a common working day for 4,000 years, at least.

6. God Himself calls it a "working" day. (Ezekiel 46:1.)

7. God did not rest upon it.

8. He never blessed it.

9. Christ did not rest upon it.

10. Jesus was a carpenter (Mark 6:3), and worked at His trade until He was thirty years old. He kept the Sabbath and worked six days in the week, as all admit. Hence He did many a hard day's work on Sunday.

11. The apostles worked upon it during the same time.

12. The apostles never rested upon it.

13. Christ never blessed it.

14. It has never been blessed by any divine authority.

15. It has never been sanctified.

16. No law was ever given to enforce the keeping of it, hence it is no transgression to work upon it. "Where no law is, there is no transgression." Romans 4:15 (See also 1 John 3:4.)

17. The New Testament nowhere forbids work to be done on it.

18. No penalty is provided for its violation.

19. No blessing is promised for its observance.

20. No regulation is given as to how it ought to be observed. Would this be so if the Lord wished us to keep it?

21. It is never called the Christian Sabbath.

22. It is never called the Sabbath day at all.

23. It is never called the Lord's day.

24. It is never called even a rest day.

25. No sacred title whatever is applied to it. Then why should we call it holy?

26. It is simply called "first day of the week."

27. Jesus never-mentioned it in any way, never took its name upon His lips, so far as the record shows.

28. The word Sunday never occurs in the Bible at all.

29. Neither God, Christ, nor inspired men ever said one word in favor of Sunday as a holy day.

30. The first day of the week is mentioned only eight times in all the New Testament. (Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2, 9; Luke 24:1; John 20:1, 19; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2.)

31. Six of these texts refer to the same first day of the week.

32. Paul directed the saints to look over their secular affairs on that day. (1Corinthians 16:2.)

33. In all the New Testament we have a record of only one religious meeting held upon that day, and even this was a night meeting. (Acts 20:5-12.)

34. There is not intimation that they ever held a meeting upon it before or after that.

35. It was not their custom to meet on that day.

36. There was no requirement to break bread on that day.

37. We have an account of only one instance in which it was done. (Acts 20:7.)

38. That was done in the night-after midnight. (Verses 7-11.) Jesus celebrated it on Thursday evening (Luke 22), and the disciples sometimes did it every day (Acts 2:42-46.)

39. The Bible nowhere says that the first day of the week commemorates the resurrection of Christ. This is a tradition of men, which contradicts the law of God. (Matthew 15:1-9.) Baptism commemorates the burial and resurrection of Jesus. (Romans 6:3-5.)

40. Finally, the New Testament is totally silent with regard to any change of the Sabbath day or any sacredness for the first day.

Here are one hundred plain Bible facts upon this question, showing conclusively that the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord in both the Old and New Testament.*

Silence

Are you listening
To anything that I say
'Cause I've been praying
How many prayers can I pray
I'm still waiting
Maybe You'll show up today

I know You're here, but I can't feel You
And if You're speaking, I can't hear You
How much longer will this last

So okay,
Answer me with silence
It's okay if You don't say a word
You're testing me to trust You'll be faithful in this quiet
So okay
Answer me
With silence

Why do I question
Your intentions for me
When Your affection
Is a proven legacy

Oh Father, Father
Turn my fears into peace
I know Your love will never leave
I know You want what's best for me

You're testing me to trust You'll be faithful in this quiet

Oh, it's okay
If You answer me with silence
And it's okay if You don't say a word
You're testing me to trust You'll be faithful in this quiet
So okay
Answer me
With silence

God Only Knows

You're in one of those seasons
Everything seems to go so wrong
Wish I could give you a reason
But even I'm barely holding on
When it's hard to find the answers
Let this be your hope

God only knows all your broken pieces
Only He knows what you're going through
God only knows what you hide inside
And He's holding onto you
God only knows
God only knows

You've had your fill of questions
There's so much that you need to know
I don't blame you for asking
But it's time to let go of control
And I'm sorry for what you're feeling
Please hold on to this hope

God only knows all your broken pieces
Only He knows what you're going through
God only knows what you hide inside
And He's holding onto you
God only knows
God only knows

Come on, come on, He knows your pain
Come on, come on, hold onto faith
Come on, come on, you're on your way
My friend, your struggle has an ending day

God only knows all your broken pieces
Only He knows what you're going through
God only knows what you hide inside
And He's holding onto you

God only knows
God only knows

Only He knows
Only He knows
Only He knows

Seventh-Day Adventist Church 28 Fundamental Beliefs

1. The Holy Scriptures: The Holy Scriptures, Old and New Testaments, are the written Word of God, given by divine inspiration through holy men of God who spoke and wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. In this Word, God has committed to man the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are the infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the test of experience, the authoritative revealer of doctrines, and the trustworthy record of God's acts in history. (2 Peter 1:20, 21; 2 Tim. 3:16, 17; Ps. 119:105; Prov. 30:5, 6; Isa. 8:20; John 17:17; 1 Thess. 2:13; Heb. 4:12.)

2. The Trinity
: There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:17; Rev. 14:7.)

3. The Father
: God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. The qualities and powers exhibited in the Son and the Holy Spirit are also revelations of the Father. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; 1 Cor. 15:28; John 3:16; 1 John 4:8; 1 Tim. 1:17; Ex. 34:6, 7; John 14:9.)

4. The Son
: God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of humanity is accomplished, and the world is judged. Forever truly God, He became also truly man, Jesus the Christ. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation as a human being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God. By His miracles He manifested God's power and was attested as God's promised Messiah. He suffered and died voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place, was raised from the dead, and ascended to minister in the heavenly sanctuary in our behalf. He will come again in glory for the final deliverance of His people and the restoration of all things. (John 1:1-3, 14; Col. 1:15-19; John 10:30; 14:9; Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:17-19; John 5:22; Luke 1:35; Phil. 2:5-11; Heb. 2:9-18; 1 Cor. 15:3, 4; Heb. 8:1, 2; John 14:1-3.)

5. The Holy Spirit
: God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ's life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond He renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with His children, He extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures leads it into all truth. (Gen. 1:1, 2; Luke 1:35; 4:18; Acts 10:38; 2 Peter 1:21; 2 Cor. 3:18; Eph. 4:11, 12; Acts 1:8; John 14:16-18, 26; 15:26, 27; 16:7-13.)

6. Creation
: God is Creator of all things, and has revealed in Scripture the authentic account of His creative activity. In six days the Lord made "the heaven and the earth" and all living things upon the earth, and rested on the seventh day of that first week. Thus He established the Sabbath as a perpetual memorial of His completed creative work. The first man and woman were made in the image of God as the crowning work of Creation, given dominion over the world, and charged with responsibility to care for it. When the world was finished it was ``very good,'' declaring the glory of God. (Gen. 1; 2; Ex. 20:8-11; Ps. 19:1-6; 33:6, 9; 104; Heb. 11:3.)

7. The Nature of Man
: Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When our first parents disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from their high position under God. The image of God in them was marred and they became subject to death. Their descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born with weaknesses and tendencies to evil. But God in Christ reconciled the world to Himself and by His Spirit restores in penitent mortals the image of their Maker. Created for the glory of God, they are called to love Him and one another, and to care for their environment. (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:7; Ps. 8:4-8; Acts 17:24-28; Gen. 3; Ps. 51:5; Rom. 5:12-17; 2 Cor. 5:19, 20; Ps. 51:10; 1 John 4:7, 8, 11, 20; Gen. 2:15.)

8. The Great Controversy
: All humanity is now involved in a great controversy between Christ and Satan regarding the character of God, His law, and His sovereignty over the universe. This conflict originated in heaven when a created being, endowed with freedom of choice, in self-exaltation became Satan, God's adversary, and led into rebellion a portion of the angels. He introduced the spirit of rebellion into this world when he led Adam and Eve into sin. This human sin resulted in the distortion of the image of God in humanity, the disordering of the created world, and its eventual devastation at the time of the worldwide flood. Observed by the whole creation, this world became the arena of the universal conflict, out of which the God of love will ultimately be vindicated. To assist His people in this controversy, Christ sends the Holy Spirit and the loyal angels to guide, protect, and sustain them in the way of salvation. (Rev. 12:4-9; Isa. 14:12-14; Eze. 28:12-18; Gen. 3; Rom. 1:19-32; 5:12-21; 8:19-22; Gen. 6-8; 2 Peter 3:6; 1 Cor. 4:9; Heb. 1:14.)

9. The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Christ
: In Christ's life of perfect obedience to God's will, His suffering, death, and resurrection, God provided the only means of atonement for human sin, so that those who by faith accept this atonement may have eternal life, and the whole creation may better understand the infinite and holy love of the Creator. This perfect atonement vindicates the righteousness of God's law and the graciousness of His character; for it both condemns our sin and provides for our forgiveness. The death of Christ is substitutionary and expiatory, reconciling and transforming. The resurrection of Christ proclaims God's triumph over the forces of evil, and for those who accept the atonement assures their final victory over sin and death. It declares the Lordship of Jesus Christ, before whom every knee in heaven and on earth will bow. (John 3:16; Isa. 53; 1 Peter 2:21, 22; 1 Cor. 15:3, 4, 20-22; 2 Cor. 5:14, 15, 19-21; Rom. 1:4; 3:25; 4:25; 8:3, 4; 1 John 2:2; 4:10; Col. 2:15; Phil. 2:6-11.)

10. The Experience of Salvation
: In infinite love and mercy God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, so that in Him we might be made the righteousness of God. Led by the Holy Spirit we sense our need, acknowledge our sinfulness, repent of our transgressions, and exercise faith in Jesus as Lord and Christ, as Substitute and Example. This faith which receives salvation comes through the divine power of the Word and is the gift of God's grace. Through Christ we are justified, adopted as God's sons and daughters, and delivered from the lordship of sin. Through the Spirit we are born again and sanctified; the Spirit renews our minds, writes God's law of love in our hearts, and we are given the power to live a holy life. Abiding in Him we become partakers of the divine nature and have the assurance of salvation now and in the judgment. (2 Cor. 5:17-21; John 3:16; Gal. 1:4; 4:4-7; Titus 3:3-7; John 16:8; Gal. 3:13, 14; 1 Peter 2:21, 22; Rom. 10:17; Luke 17:5; Mark 9:23, 24; Eph. 2:5-10; Rom. 3:21-26; Col. 1:13, 14; Rom. 8:14-17; Gal. 3:26; John 3:3-8; 1 Peter 1:23; Rom. 12:2; Heb. 8:7-12; Eze. 36:25-27; 2 Peter 1:3, 4; Rom. 8:1-4; 5:6-10.)

11. Growing in Christ
: By His death on the cross Jesus triumphed over the forces of evil. He who subjugated the demonic spirits during His earthly ministry has broken their power and made certain their ultimate doom. Jesus' victory gives us victory over the evil forces that still seek to control us, as we walk with Him in peace, joy, and assurance of His love. Now the Holy Spirit dwells within us and empowers us. Continually committed to Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, we are set free from the burden of our past deeds. No longer do we live in the darkness, fear of evil powers, ignorance, and meaninglessness of our former way of life. In this new freedom in Jesus, we are called to grow into the likeness of His character, communing with Him daily in prayer, feeding on His Word, meditating on it and on His providence, singing His praises, gathering together for worship, and participating in the mission of the Church. As we give ourselves in loving service to those around us and in witnessing to His salvation, His constant presence with us through the Spirit transforms every moment and every task into a spiritual experience. (Ps 1:1, 2; 23:4; 77:11, 12; Col 1:13, 14; 2:6, 14, 15; Luke 10:17-20; Eph 5:19, 20; 6:12-18; 1 Thess 5:23; 2 Peter 2:9; 3:18; 2 Cor. 3:17, 18; Phil 3:7-14; 1 Thess 5:16-18; Matt 20:25-28; John 20:21; Gal 5:22-25; Rom 8:38, 39; 1 John 4:4; Heb 10:25.)

12. The Church
: The church is the community of believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. In continuity with the people of God in Old Testament times, we are called out from the world; and we join together for worship, for fellowship, for instruction in the Word, for the celebration of the Lord's Supper, for service to all mankind, and for the worldwide proclamation of the gospel. The church derives its authority from Christ, who is the incarnate Word, and from the Scriptures, which are the written Word. The church is God's family; adopted by Him as children, its members live on the basis of the new covenant. The church is the body of Christ, a community of faith of which Christ Himself is the Head. The church is the bride for whom Christ died that He might sanctify and cleanse her. At His return in triumph, He will present her to Himself a glorious church, the faithful of all the ages, the purchase of His blood, not having spot or wrinkle, but holy and without blemish. (Gen. 12:3; Acts 7:38; Eph. 4:11-15; 3:8-11; Matt. 28:19, 20; 16:13-20; 18:18; Eph. 2:19-22; 1:22, 23; 5:23-27; Col. 1:17, 18.)

13. The Remnant and Its Mission
: The universal church is composed of all who truly believe in Christ, but in the last days, a time of widespread apostasy, a remnant has been called out to keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. This remnant announces the arrival of the judgment hour, proclaims salvation through Christ, and heralds the approach of His second advent. This proclamation is symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14; it coincides with the work of judgment in heaven and results in a work of repentance and reform on earth. Every believer is called to have a personal part in this worldwide witness. (Rev. 12:17; 14:6-12; 18:1-4; 2 Cor. 5:10; Jude 3, 14; 1 Peter 1:16-19; 2 Peter 3:10-14; Rev. 21:1-14.)

14. Unity in the Body of Christ
: The church is one body with many members, called from every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. In Christ we are a new creation; distinctions of race, culture, learning, and nationality, and differences between high and low, rich and poor, male and female, must not be divisive among us. We are all equal in Christ, who by one Spirit has bonded us into one fellowship with Him and with one another; we are to serve and be served without partiality or reservation. Through the revelation of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures we share the same faith and hope, and reach out in one witness to all. This unity has its source in the oneness of the triune God, who has adopted us as His children. (Rom. 12:4, 5; 1 Cor. 12:12-14; Matt. 28:19, 20; Ps. 133:1; 2 Cor. 5:16, 17; Acts 17:26, 27; Gal. 3:27, 29; Col. 3:10-15; Eph. 4:14-16; 4:1-6; John 17:20-23.)

15. Baptism
: By baptism we confess our faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and testify of our death to sin and of our purpose to walk in newness of life. Thus we acknowledge Christ as Lord and Saviour, become His people, and are received as members by His church. Baptism is a symbol of our union with Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, and our reception of the Holy Spirit. It is by immersion in water and is contingent on an affirmation of faith in Jesus and evidence of repentance of sin. It follows instruction in the Holy Scriptures and acceptance of their teachings. (Rom. 6:1-6; Col. 2:12, 13; Acts 16:30-33; 22:16; 2:38; Matt. 28:19, 20.)

16. The Lord's Supper
: The Lord's Supper is a participation in the emblems of the body and blood of Jesus as an expression of faith in Him, our Lord and Saviour. In this experience of communion Christ is present to meet and strengthen His people. As we partake, we joyfully proclaim the Lord's death until He comes again. Preparation for the Supper includes self-examination, repentance, and confession. The Master ordained the service of foot washing to signify renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christlike humility, and to unite our hearts in love. The communion service is open to all believing Christians. (1 Cor. 10:16, 17; 11:23-30; Matt. 26:17-30; Rev. 3:20; John 6:48-63; 13:1-17.)

17. Spiritual Gifts and Ministries
: God bestows upon all members of His church in every age spiritual gifts which each member is to employ in loving ministry for the common good of the church and of humanity. Given by the agency of the Holy Spirit, who apportions to each member as He wills, the gifts provide all abilities and ministries needed by the church to fulfill its divinely ordained functions. According to the Scriptures, these gifts include such ministries as faith, healing, prophecy, proclamation, teaching, administration, reconciliation, compassion, and self-sacrificing service and charity for the help and encouragement of people. Some members are called of God and endowed by the Spirit for functions recognized by the church in pastoral, evangelistic, apostolic, and teaching ministries particularly needed to equip the members for service, to build up the church to spiritual maturity, and to foster unity of the faith and knowledge of God. When members employ these spiritual gifts as faithful stewards of God's varied grace, the church is protected from the destructive influence of false doctrine, grows with a growth that is from God, and is built up in faith and love. (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:9-11, 27, 28; Eph. 4:8, 11-16; Acts 6:1-7; 1 Tim. 3:1-13; 1 Peter 4:10, 11.)

18. The Gift of Prophecy
: One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White . As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts 2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10.)

19. The Law of God
: The great principles of God's law are embodied in the Ten Commandments and exemplified in the life of Christ. They express God's love, will, and purposes concerning human conduct and relationships and are binding upon all people in every age. These precepts are the basis of God's covenant with His people and the standard in God's judgment. Through the agency of the Holy Spirit they point out sin and awaken a sense of need for a Saviour. Salvation is all of grace and not of works, but its fruitage is obedience to the Commandments. This obedience develops Christian character and results in a sense of well-being. It is an evidence of our love for the Lord and our concern for our fellow men. The obedience of faith demonstrates the power of Christ to transform lives, and therefore strengthens Christian witness. (Ex. 20:1-17; Ps. 40:7, 8; Matt. 22:36-40; Deut. 28:1-14; Matt. 5:17-20; Heb. 8:8-10; John 15:7-10; Eph. 2:8-10; 1 John 5:3; Rom. 8:3, 4; Ps. 19:7-14.)

20. The Sabbath
: The beneficent Creator, after the six days of Creation, rested on the seventh day and instituted the Sabbath for all people as a memorial of Creation. The fourth commandment of God's unchangeable law requires the observance of this seventh-day Sabbath as the day of rest, worship, and ministry in harmony with the teaching and practice of Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day of delightful communion with God and one another. It is a symbol of our redemption in Christ, a sign of our sanctification, a token of our allegiance, and a foretaste of our eternal future in God's kingdom. The Sabbath is God's perpetual sign of His eternal covenant between Him and His people. Joyful observance of this holy time from evening to evening, sunset to sunset, is a celebration of God's creative and redemptive acts. (Gen. 2:1-3; Ex. 20:8-11; Luke 4:16; Isa. 56:5, 6; 58:13, 14; Matt. 12:1-12; Ex. 31:13-17; Eze. 20:12, 20; Deut. 5:12-15; Heb. 4:1-11; Lev. 23:32; Mark 1:32.)

21. Stewardship
: We are God's stewards, entrusted by Him with time and opportunities, abilities and possessions, and the blessings of the earth and its resources. We are responsible to Him for their proper use. We acknowledge God's ownership by faithful service to Him and our fellow men, and by returning tithes and giving offerings for the proclamation of His gospel and the support and growth of His church. Stewardship is a privilege given to us by God for nurture in love and the victory over selfishness and covetousness. The steward rejoices in the blessings that come to others as a result of his faithfulness. (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:15; 1 Chron. 29:14; Haggai 1:3-11; Mal. 3:8-12; 1 Cor. 9:9-14; Matt. 23:23; 2 Cor. 8:1-15; Rom. 15:26, 27.)

22. Christian Behavior
: We are called to be a godly people who think, feel, and act in harmony with the principles of heaven. For the Spirit to recreate in us the character of our Lord we involve ourselves only in those things which will produce Christlike purity, health, and joy in our lives. This means that our amusement and entertainment should meet the highest standards of Christian taste and beauty. While recognizing cultural differences, our dress is to be simple, modest, and neat, befitting those whose true beauty does not consist of outward adornment but in the imperishable ornament of a gentle and quiet spirit. It also means that because our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to care for them intelligently. Along with adequate exercise and rest, we are to adopt the most healthful diet possible and abstain from the unclean foods identified in the Scriptures. Since alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and the irresponsible use of drugs and narcotics are harmful to our bodies, we are to abstain from them as well. Instead, we are to engage in whatever brings our thoughts and bodies into the discipline of Christ, who desires our wholesomeness, joy, and goodness. (Rom. 12:1, 2; 1 John 2:6; Eph. 5:1-21; Phil. 4:8; 2 Cor. 10:5; 6:14-7:1; 1 Peter 3:1-4; 1 Cor. 6:19, 20; 10:31; Lev. 11:1-47; 3 John 2.)

23. Marriage and the Family
: Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith. Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence of the relationship between Christ and His church. Regarding divorce, Jesus taught that the person who divorces a spouse, except for fornication, and marries another, commits adultery. Although some family relationships may fall short of the ideal, marriage partners who fully commit themselves to each other in Christ may achieve loving unity through the guidance of the Spirit and the nurture of the church. God blesses the family and intends that its members shall assist each other toward complete maturity. Parents are to bring up their children to love and obey the Lord. By their example and their words they are to teach them that Christ is a loving disciplinarian, ever tender and caring, who wants them to become members of His body, the family of God. Increasing family closeness is one of the earmarks of the final gospel message. (Gen. 2:18-25; Matt. 19:3-9; John 2:1-11; 2 Cor. 6:14; Eph. 5:21-33; Matt. 5:31, 32; Mark 10:11, 12; Luke 16:18; 1 Cor. 7:10, 11; Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:1-4; Deut. 6:5-9; Prov. 22:6; Mal. 4:5, 6.)

24. Christ's Ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary
: There is a sanctuary in heaven, the true tabernacle which the Lord set up and not man. In it Christ ministers on our behalf, making available to believers the benefits of His atoning sacrifice offered once for all on the cross. He was inaugurated as our great High Priest and began His intercessory ministry at the time of His ascension. In 1844, at the end of the prophetic period of 2300 days, He entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It is a work of investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate disposition of all sin, typified by the cleansing of the ancient Hebrew sanctuary on the Day of Atonement. In that typical service the sanctuary was cleansed with the blood of animal sacrifices, but the heavenly things are purified with the perfect sacrifice of the blood of Jesus. The investigative judgment reveals to heavenly intelligences who among the dead are asleep in Christ and therefore, in Him, are deemed worthy to have part in the first resurrection. It also makes manifest who among the living are abiding in Christ, keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and in Him, therefore, are ready for translation into His everlasting kingdom. This judgment vindicates the justice of God in saving those who believe in Jesus. It declares that those who have remained loyal to God shall receive the kingdom. The completion of this ministry of Christ will mark the close of human probation before the Second Advent. (Heb. 8:1-5; 4:14-16; 9:11-28; 10:19-22; 1:3; 2:16, 17; Dan. 7:9-27; 8:13, 14; 9:24-27; Num. 14:34; Eze. 4:6; Lev. 16; Rev. 14:6, 7; 20:12; 14:12; 22:12.)

25. The Second Coming of Christ
: The second coming of Christ is the blessed hope of the church, the grand climax of the gospel. The Saviour's coming will be literal, personal, visible, and worldwide. When He returns, the righteous dead will be resurrected, and together with the righteous living will be glorified and taken to heaven, but the unrighteous will die. The almost complete fulfillment of most lines of prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates that Christ's coming is imminent. The time of that event has not been revealed, and we are therefore exhorted to be ready at all times. (Titus 2:13; Heb. 9:28; John 14:1-3; Acts 1:9-11; Matt. 24:14; Rev. 1:7; Matt. 24:43, 44; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15:51-54; 2 Thess. 1:7-10; 2:8; Rev. 14:14-20; 19:11-21; Matt. 24; Mark 13; Luke 21; 2 Tim. 3:1-5; 1 Thess. 5:1-6.)

26. Death and Resurrection
: The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people. When Christ, who is our life, appears, the resurrected righteous and the living righteous will be glorified and caught up to meet their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the unrighteous, will take place a thousand years later. (Rom. 6:23; 1 Tim. 6:15, 16; Eccl. 9:5, 6; Ps. 146:3, 4; John 11:11-14; Col. 3:4; 1 Cor. 15:51-54; 1 Thess. 4:13-17; John 5:28, 29; Rev. 20:1-10.)

27. The Millennium and the End of Sin
: The millennium is the thousand-year reign of Christ with His saints in heaven between the first and second resurrections. During this time the wicked dead will be judged; the earth will be utterly desolate, without living human inhabitants, but occupied by Satan and his angels. At its close Christ with His saints and the Holy City will descend from heaven to earth. The unrighteous dead will then be resurrected, and with Satan and his angels will surround the city; but fire from God will consume them and cleanse the earth. The universe will thus be freed of sin and sinners forever. (Rev. 20; 1 Cor. 6:2, 3; Jer. 4:23-26; Rev. 21:1-5; Mal. 4:1; Eze. 28:18, 19.)

28. The New Earth: On the new earth, in which righteousness dwells, God will provide an eternal home for the redeemed and a perfect environment for everlasting life, love, joy, and learning in His presence. For here God Himself will dwell with His people, and suffering and death will have passed away. The great controversy will be ended, and sin will be no more. All things, animate and inanimate, will declare that God is love; and He shall reign forever. Amen. (2 Peter 3:13; Isa. 35; 65:17-25; Matt. 5:5; Rev. 21:1-7; 22:1-5; 11:15.

Say Goodbye

I saw you today
My familiar stranger
Everything's changed
You have come so far
You're different now
Would you go back, would you want to anyhow

Say goodbye, say goodbye
To the you I knew before
Say hello, say hello to a new beginning
Say goodbye, say goodbye
To the you I knew before
This is your genesis

Face to face
The present and past collide
And it's no mistake
I see the future in your eyes
You seem so free
Like nothing's ever gonna keep you down

Say goodbye, say goodbye
To the you I knew before
Say hello, say hello to a new beginning
Say goodbye, say goodbye
To the you I knew before
This is your genesis

You're different now
You're different somehow
You’re different now

Say goodbye, say goodbye

Because of Love

Like driving rain on parched dry land
I fell hard against your grace
Nowhere to run - no hiding place
Hard as truth having to face you
I've drank so much from the glass of life
Made up my mind this time to do it right
I'll save it all for you - I'll pay your price
Some things you just don't sacrifice

If I could see - into the blue
I'd still give everything to you
And it would be - yes it would be because of love

There have been times, I know I've moved too slow
But I'll cover the distance, now here we go
Watch me fade in the afterglow
Where it ends - I don't know
But we've got a chance and that's all we need
We only need one chance if we really believe
And I do - you know I do
Could you believe it too

If I could see - into the blue
I'd still give everything to you
And it would be - yes it would be because of love
This mystery wrapped up in you
When it begins to all come true
Then it will be - yes it will be because of love

I may be wrong but that's alright
When the weather changes - hang on tight
Sweet rain falls down from above
Rain on me because of love...

Lost and Found

I really wanted to go
It hurt me too much to stay
I run away so fast that my heart couldn’t find the way
Then you came along and I was tired of my sadness
It seemed as though my life went on but the feeling didn’t last

Holding on to everything that’s gone
Saving my life from going on
Thinking of what else I could have done
It wasn’t meant to be
(And then you came along and I was lost and found
My life went on but I was lost and found)
I was lost and found

I was back on my feet
You could say I was barely walking
But the cut was deep
And I was holding on to past

Holding on to everything that’s gone
Saving my life from going on
Thinking of what else I could have done
It wasn’t meant to be
(And then you came along and I was lost and found
My life went on but I was lost and found)

She had stolen my illusions and I needed them so badly
I grew tired of my confusion
`Cause she was still there – everywhere

You came along and I was lost and found (lost and found)
My life went on but I was lost and found
You came along when I was stuck in the past
There was a new life in sight but I was blind

Holding on to everything that’s gone
Saving my life from going on
Thinking of what else I could have done
It wasn’t meant to be
(And then you came along and I was lost and found
My life went on but I was lost and found)
There was a new life in sight but I was blind

This song happens to ring true for me so the lyrics are only modified to replace "he" with "she".

Jesus Returns

T'was The Night JESUS Came!

T'was the night Jesus came

and all through the house,
not a person was praying,
not one in the house…

The Bible was left
on the shelf without care,
for no one thought
Jesus would come there…

The children were dressing
to crawl into bed

not once ever kneeling
or bowing their head…

And Mom in the rocking chair
with babe on her lap,
was watching the Late Show
as I took a nap…

When out of the east
there rose such a clatter,

I sprang to my feet
to see what was the matter…

Away to the window

I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutters
and lifted the sash...

When what to my wondering

eyes should appear,

but Angels proclaiming
that Jesus was here...

The light of His face

made me cover my head...
was Jesus returning
just like He'd said ...

And though I possessed

worldly wisdom and wealth,
I cried when I saw Him
in spite of myself...

In the Book of Life
which he held in His hand,
was written the name
of every saved man...

He spoke not a word
as He searched for my name,
when He said "it's not here"

My head hung in shame...

The people whose names
had been written with love,

He gathered to take
to His Father above...

With those who were ready

He rose without sound,
while all of the others
were left standing around...

I fell to my knees
but it was too late,
I'd waited too long
and thus sealed my fate...

I stood and I cried
as they rose out of sight,
Oh, if only I'd known
that this was the night...

In the words of this poem
the meaning is clear
the coming of Jesus
is now drawing near...

There's only one life
and when comes the last call,
we'll find out that the Bible
was true after all.

I Have Decided To Follow Jesus

I have decided to follow Jesus
I have decided to follow Jesus
I have decided to follow Jesus
No turning back, no turning back.

The world behind me, the Cross before me
The world behind me, the Cross before me
The world behind me, the Cross before me
No turning back, no turning back.

Tho' none go with me, still I will follow
Tho' none go with me, still I will follow
Tho' none go with me, still I will follow
No turning back, no turning back.

Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
No turning back, no turning back.

Marriage Message - When The "WE" Breaks Apart

When we marry, most of us don't often think about changing our behaviour so we "become one" as the scriptures tell us to do. So many marriage ceremonies even include lighting a Unity Candle which is to symbolize two individual lives then becoming one. But do we? Do we, from that day forward, start behaving as if we're united as a marital team just because we pledge that we will?

Steve and I (Cindy) have to confess that we didn't. For some unexplainable reason it never even occurred to us that we'd need to be intentional in becoming a "we" instead of an alone "him" and "her" after we're married. I guess we just assumed we would act differently. But in all honesty we really didn't.  It's not that any of us stopped being a "him" and a "her" on our wedding day, but after marriage if our individual behaviour causes problems within our married lives we need to talk about it and come to some kind of a compromise so our marriage isn't hurt by it and the "WE" breaks apart. Otherwise, what was the purpose of marrying in the first place?

Read what Dr David Ludwig says on the subject on, "Think We, Not Me" from the book, "Lovers for Life", published by Christian Publications, www.christianpublications.com ISBN 0-87509-994-7. (This book has many contributing authors, which David Ludwig is one of them.)

He writes: Think of the last time the mood shifted between the two of you. Perhaps it was last night when Mother called, or when you talked about money. Let me guess who you blamed for your frustration and internal upset. It wasn't yourself, so you blamed the only other person you could see,

right?

Well, you made a critical error! Neither of you controls the mood of your relationship. The "we" controls the atmosphere! When the two of you are allies and your spirits are united, the mood is uplifting and friendly. But when the "we" breaks down and you are at odds with each other, the    mood shifts to turbulent and upsetting. When you harbour resentment toward each other, a bad mood settles into the relationship.

No wonder Paul advises, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). He uses even stronger language in Philippians 2:1-2: If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having

the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

When you are "one in spirit," you have a safe place with each other. The mood is friendly, and you are allies. You are a "we" and are working together. It is safe to share your thoughts and feelings with each other. You can be "soul mates."

But when the "we" breaks down, it's no longer safe! You're defensive and guarded. The relationship splits into "you" and "me." There is no one in charge, and the atmosphere becomes uncertain and confusing. Both of you get your feelings hurt and end up upset and angry with each other. Since you cannot see the "we," you blame each other for the hurt and frustration. You think, If only he/she would not react that way. Then you spend your energy trying to change the other person.

But the other person is not to blame! You cannot see the "we," but it does control the spirit (mood) of the relationship. When this "one another" breaks down, the mood shifts. No wonder the apostle Paul uses the words one another so often: "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ"

(Ephesians 5:21). The "one another" is the "we."

The deep spiritual meaning of this passage is to make the "we" more important than the "me." When your feelings are hurt and you're upset, it's natural to nurse hurt feelings and seek to get even. Both of these actions put the "me" as more important than the "we".

So how do you do the "unnatural" and put the "we” above your own hurt and upset? The answer is in the aforementioned verse: out of reverence for Christ." The Holy Spirit can change your attitude at this critical moment. Christ's presence has the power to change your heart and mind to make this shift from "me" to "we."

As you pray, "Lord, help my spirit; help change my attitude," His Spirit will be at work in your heart to change reality. Call this a "reality check." Right in the midst of your desire to nurse your hurt feelings, Christ will remind you of His love and of your love for one another. This will help to put the relationship in its proper place - the "we" will become more important than the "me."

The next time the mood shifts and you are left confused, hurt and upset, try the following steps:

1.  Become aware that the "we" just broke down.

2.  Stop blaming the other person.

3.  Assume that there has been a misunderstanding.

4.  Offer a prayer to get your attitude right.

5.  Approach the other person in the right spirit.

6.  Begin by saying, "WE have a problem. Let's talk."

Don't think this is easy! It is highly unnatural. It is more natural to assume that the other person is to blame. This is what puts the "me" above the "we." So don't overlook the importance of bringing Christ into the equation. His love changes reality. His presence can make the "we" more important than the "me."

Put the following on your refrigerator door or bathroom mirror:

SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER OUT OF REVERENCE TO CHRIST.

Surviving Shocks of Pain and Stress

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. Isaiah 66:13

A few years ago several medical researchers were studying the effect of the shocks of life on the central nervous system. They took a lamb and placed it in his pen alone. They then hooked up electric shock devices around the pen. As the lamb wandered to one side of the pen, the researchers threw a switch and the lamb was shocked. Immediately it twitched and scampered to another part of the pen. Soon the researchers shocked the lamb again. Again he ran.

As the research continued, the scientists discovered that the lamb would never return to a place where he had been previously shocked. After a series of shocks, the little lamb just stood in the center of his pen quivering. He had no place to run, and no place to hide. The shocks were everywhere. Completely overcome emotionally, filled with anxiety and stress, his nerves gave way.

The researchers then took this lamb’s twin and placed it in a pen. This time, they put the lamb’s mother in with him. Presently, they shocked him. Again the lamb ran, but this time he ran to his mother and snuggled up to her closely. Evidently she reassured him, because he left her side to begin eating again. The researchers threw the switch again, and once again the lamb ran to his mother. Reassuringly she consoled him again.

The researchers noticed a remarkable difference in the two lambs. The second lamb had no fear of returning to the spot where he received the shock. To the utter amazement of the researchers, further shocks no longer disturbed him. He showed none of the symptoms of nervousness, stress, and anxiety that his twin showed under the same circumstances.

What made this remarkable difference? He had the reassurance of someone to flee to in stress. He had confidence and power in someone outside of himself to cope with the stress.

We’re the same way. When we have to face pain and anxiety alone, we can easily become overwhelmed. Satan knows this. That’s why he’s working so hard to make people feel alienated from family and friends.

Just as the lamb found reassurance in the presence of his mother, true rest for God’s children is found in a loving, trust relationship with their Creator. Snuggled safe in the arms of Jesus we can withstand whatever shocks this world may inflict upon us.

Precious Lord, lead me safely through the land mines of pain, worry, and stress. Amen.

Kinds of Suffering

There are three basic kinds of suffering, all of which can bring about much pain and discomfort to the believer.

Physical suffering. This, of course, occurs when a part of our body is injured or begins to malfunction, resulting in a disharmony between it and the rest of the body. Several factors can be involved in physical suffering. It can be caused by an accident or by carelessness (2 Samuel 4:4). It can be due to birth deformities (John 9:1). It can result from internal disorders (Luke 8:43). Finally, physical suffering may actually be caused by Satan (Job 2:7; Luke 13:16).

Mental suffering. In many ways this suffering is even more intense than physical suffering. Justified or unjustified concern over some matter can easily produce mental anguish. Paul himself experienced “fear, and much trembling” and “anguish of heart” (1 Corinthians 2:3; 2 Corinthians 1:8; 2:4, 13; 7:5).

Spiritual suffering. Spiritual suffering can come from the world (1 John 2:15-17), the flesh (Romans 7:18-24), or the devil. Often it is the latter. See Acts 13:8-11; 16:16-18; 1 Thessalonians 2:18.

Purposes of Suffering

Perhaps the most painful question confronting the believer is the problem of suffering. Why does a loving and wise God permit His children to suffer? The Scriptures offer a number of reasons for this.

To produce fruit. If we allow suffering to accomplish its purpose, it can bring forth patience (Hebrews 10:36; James 1:3), joy (Psalm 30:5; 126:6), knowledge (Psalm 94:12), and maturity (1 Peter 5:10).

To silence the devil. Satan once accused Job of merely serving God for the material blessings involved. But the Lord allowed the devil to torment Job to demonstrate that His servant loved God because of who He was, and not for what he could get from Him (Job 1:9-12; 2:3-7).

To glorify God (John 9:1-3; 11:1-4).

To make us like Jesus. “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death” (Philippians 3:10).

To teach us dependence. This is brought out by both Christ (John 15:1-5) and the apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 12:1-10).

To refine our lives (Psalm 66:10-12; Proverbs 17:3; 1 Peter 1:6, 7).

To rebuke our sin (1 Peter 2:20; 3:17; 4:15). As a faithful earthly father must in love punish his erring child, so does our heavenly Father (Hebrews 12:5-9).

To enlarge our ministry toward others (2 Corinthians 1:3-7). It has been observed that he who has suffered much speaks many languages (understands others).

Responses to Suffering

In the hour of suffering the Christian should attempt to determine first of all just why he or she may be suffering. One can suffer because of his position or his disposition. Peter brings this truth out in his first epistle: “Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully” (1 Peter 2:18, 19).

Suffering is often a two-sided coin. On the one side suffering may be viewed as coming from God to bring out the best in us. See Genesis 22:1, 2, 15-18; Hebrews 11:17. On the other side Satan attempts to use the same temptation and suffering to bring out the worst in us (James 1:13, 14). Finally, the believer can react to suffering in three different ways:

  1. Despise it, that is, treat it too lightly, as did Esau his birthright (Hebrews 12:5, 16).

  1. Faint under it, that is, treat it too seriously (Hebrews 12:5).

  1. Be exercised by it, that is, receive instruction from it. This is the reaction desired by God (Hebrews 12:11-13).

During this time both Peter and Paul advise us to commit our pain and suffering to God, realizing He is faithful to work out all things for our good and God’s glory (Romans 8:28; 1 Peter 4:19). James tells us to count it all joy when we experience these dark hours (James 1:2).

Examples of Suffering

In the Word of God there are four great examples of believers suffering for the sake of righteousness. These are: Joseph, Job, Jeremiah, and Paul.

The sufferings of Joseph: he was hated by his brothers (Genesis 37:4, 5, 8); he was sold into slavery (Genesis 37:28); he was severely tempted (Genesis 39:7); and he was imprisoned (Genesis 39:20).

The sufferings of Job: His oxen and donkeys were stolen and his farmhands killed (Job 1:14, 15); his sheep and herdsmen were burned by a fire (Job 1:16); his camels were stolen and his servants killed (Job 1:17); his sons and daughters died in a windstorm (Job 1:18, 19); and he was struck with boils (Job 2:7).

The sufferings of Jeremiah: He was persecuted by his own family (Jeremiah 12:6); he was plotted against by his own hometown (Jeremiah 11:18-23); he was rejected and ridiculed by his religious peers (Jeremiah 20:1-3, 7-9); and he was arrested, beaten, and accused of treason (Jeremiah 37:11-16).

The sufferings of Paul: He was plotted against (Acts 9:23, 29; 20:3; 21:30; 23:10, 12; 25:3); he was stoned and left for dead (Acts 14:19); he was subjected to satanic pressure (1 Thessalonians 2:18); he was beaten and jailed at Philippi (Acts 16:19-24); he was ridiculed (Acts 17:16-18; 26:24); he was falsely accused (Acts 21:21, 28; 24:5-9); he endured a number of violent storms at sea (2 Corinthians 11:25; Acts 27:14-20); he was bitten by a serpent (Acts 28:3, 4); and he was forsaken by all (2 Timothy 4:10, 16).

Don't Quit!

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When friends are low, and debts are high,

And you cannot smile; you only sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Cry if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns

And many a failure comes to her

Who might have won had she stuck it out.

Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow,

For you just may succeed with the other blow!

Often the goal is much nearer than it seems

To the faint and weary.

Often the struggler has given up,

Just when she might have captured the victor’s cup.

Then she learns only too late,

How close she was to the golden gate!

Success is failure turned inside out;

The silver tint of the cloud of doubt.

And you can never tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems afar!

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,

It’s when things go wrong that you must never quit!

Peppy VS Preppy

The following was written by me, inspired by a friend, in relation to what she wrote about one Peppy (Princess Power Puff). Therefore, this is about Preppy (Prince Power Puff) aka, the story of my life as far as relationships go, thus far: (Written April 19, 2005)

Preppy too, though not having ever been in a relationship before, was hurt by several people (girls in his case) in various ways over the course of his life. He also built walls around his heart to guard from any further attacks from the opposite sex. For by doing so, he was assured that he would never have to waste time, effort, or feeling on someone that would only cause him pain sooner or later.

At times, he let his guard down and opened the gate to the walls in hopes that the one standing before them was different but only to find that the one standing there looking oh-so-beautiful had a dagger in hand which once again, pierced his already wounded heart. He slowly recovered and proceeded to remove the one gate that would be the avenue to his heart.

All was fine for a time except when some truly beautiful girls, both inwardly and outwardly, attempted to take on the walls that he had set before his heart. With no gate, they were unable to penetrate and therefore, walked away...or in some cases, were pushed away by the defense mechanisms that came into affect when the walls to his heart had sensed the possibility of being compromised. He called these brave souls, "missed opportunities" in retrospect.

As time now fast-forwards to present day, Preppy has changed his ways, perhaps because of those so called "missed opportunities"...or maybe, after pondering one particular concept. The concept that love risks. In any case, Preppy has torn down the walls he once had over his heart and has now made it possible for all members of the opposite sex to have equal opportunity at entering his heart, whether they will end up hurting him or not. Yet, though he now stands ready, having matured and having learned from past mistakes, to sail into the unknown realm of relationships, he has no one to be ready for...

To Be Continued...

Part 2 (The Continuation - September 14, 2007):

Preppy, after years of coming up short, missed opportunities, doubts and questions...has officially sailed into the unknown realm of relationships and has finally found that special someone to be ready for. Being at the brink of losing hope and giving up was short-lived, for God knew better and found him an answer.

Preppy once questioned how he could ever let go of the past if he had nothing to hold on to or move on to in the future. The past can now be safely put to rest...remembered and learned from, but no longer dwelled upon. He now only hopes that he can be the answer for her as she is for him, long-term...only time will tell.

To Die For

You're as steady as the falling rain.
You're the antidote to all the pain.
Like an angel answering my prayer.
Like a flower in the summer air.
There's a meaning I, tried hard to escape.
But this time I can't turn away.

You're the one to, die for.
When I'm with you, I just wanna give more.
The one to, die for, my love will never end.
You make me wanna live again.

You're the rising of the morning sun.
You're the constant in a world undone.
You're the honesty in my surprise.
You're the strength I thought I'd lost inside.
And to your defence, I'm happy to rise.
My honour waits by your side.

You're the one to, die for.
When I'm with you, I just wanna give more.
The one to, die for and my love will never end.
You make me wanna live again

(One to, die for)
When I'm with you, I just wanna give more.
The one to, die for and my love will never end.
You make me wanna live again.
You make me wanna live again.

You make me wanna live, again.
(One to, die for)
When I'm with you, I just wanna give more.
The one to, die for and my love will never end.
You make me wanna live, again.
(The One to, die for)
(I just wanna give more)
(One to, die for)

You're the one to, die for.
When I'm with you, I just wanna give more.
The one to, die for, my love will never end
You make me wanna live, again.

The one to, die for,
And my love will never end, never end, never end,...

(You make me wanna live again)

I Don't Want To Get Hurt

In everything I see you appear with me, how come? How come?
And everything I do involves you too. We are like one.
In my life there has been so many changes
and I don't want to be left out in the rain

I don't want to get hurt, I've done my time.
All I want from you is to tell the truth.
I don't want to get hurt no more this time.
I don't want to go blind and find it's falling apart all the time

In the middle of a dream you are there for me, your face, your lips.
But there's no way you can tell cos I hide it really well, so well.
In my life there has been loving and lying
and I don't need another reason to cry

I don't want to get hurt...
I don't want to go blind and find I'm falling apart one more time.

Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)

I left and wrote down this song cos my life looked so shatterd
I thank the Lord I'm still strong like before
I picked myself up from the floor and tried

I tried just a little bit harder, oh yea
If someone wants you to bleed and it feels like you're dying
Don't make the moves you don't need, don't cry, just say ba-ba-bye-bye and try, try

Try just a little bit harder, you'll survive
Try just a little bit harder, go ahead and try

Mondays and rainy days were in my pocket
I don't want to send them on to you
Bring them home to you

Dating

Dating

What kind of person should you date?
It's in the Bible, II Timothy 2:22, TLB. "Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts."
It is unwise to date someone who doesn't love God. It's in the Bible, II Corinthians 6:14-15, TLB. "Don't be teamed with those who do not love the Lord, for what do the people of God have in common with the people of sin? How can light live with darkness? And what harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a Christian be a partner with one who doesn't believe?" Amos 3:3, NKJV says, "Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?"
Don't date someone who claims to be a Christian but doesn't live it.
It's in the Bible, I Corinthians 5:11, TLB. "What I meant was that you are not to keep company with anyone who claims to be a brother Christian but indulges in sexual sins, or is greedy, or is a swindler, or worships idols, or is a drunkard, or abusive. Don't even eat lunch with such a person."
Avoid dating people who have a bad temper. It's in the Bible, Proverbs 22:24, TLB. "Keep away from angry, short-tempered men, lest you learn to be like them and endanger your soul."
Don't date a lazy Christian.
It's in the Bible, II Thessalonians 3:6, TLB. "Now here is a command, dear brothers, given in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ by his authority: Stay away from any Christian who spends his days in laziness and does not follow the ideal of hard work we set up for you."
Inner beauty counts the most.
It's in the Bible, I Peter 3:4, TLB. "Be beautiful inside, in your hearts, with the lasting charm of a gentle and quiet spirit that is so precious to God."
Date someone with a good attitude. It's in the Bible, Romans 15:5-6, TLB. "May God who gives patience, steadiness, and encouragement help you to live in complete harmony with each other—each with the attitude of Christ toward the other."
Date someone who encourages you and is supportive.
It's in the Bible, Philippians 2:1-2, TLB. "Is there any such thing as Christians cheering each other up? Do you love me enough to want to help me? Does it mean anything to you that we are brothers in the Lord, sharing the same Spirit? Are your hearts tender and sympathetic at all? Then make me truly happy by loving each other, working together with one heart and mind and purpose.
In a dating relationship don't be exclusive—care about others too. It's in the Bible, Philippians 2:4, TLB. "Don't just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing."
Let the relationship progress step by step. It's in the Bible, II Peter 1:6-7, TLB. "Next, learn to put aside your own desires so that you will become patient and godly, gladly letting God have his way with you. This will make possible the next step, which is for you to enjoy other people and to like them, and finally you will grow to love them deeply."
What to avoid on dates.
It's in the Bible, Romans 13:13, TLB. "Be decent and true in everything you do so that all can approve your behavior. Don't spend your time in wild parties and getting drunk or in adultery and lust, or fighting, or jealousy."
Dating should not include a sexual relationship.
It's in the Bible, I Corinthians 6:13,18, TLB. "But sexual sin is never right: our bodies were not made for that, but for the Lord…That is why I say to run from sex sin. No other sin affects the body as this one does. When you sin this sin it is against your own body."
Keep yourself pure. It's in the Bible, I John 3:3, TLB. "And everyone who really believes this will try to stay pure because Christ is pure."
To keep from hurting ourselves, sexual desires and activities must be placed under Christ's control. It's in the Bible, I Thessalonians 4:3-5, TLB. "For God wants you to be holy and pure and to keep clear of all sexual sin so that each of you will marry in holiness and honor—not in lustful passion as the heathen do, in their ignorance of God and his ways."
If you have already gone too far physically, what should you do?
First, acknowledge your sin. It's in the Bible, Psalm 51:2-4, TLB. "Oh, wash me, cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again. For I admit my shameful deed—it haunts me day and night."
Second, Ask forgiveness for your sin—God says you can start over again. It's in the Bible, Psalm 51:7-12, TLB. "Sprinkle me with the cleansing blood and I shall be clean again. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. And after You have punished me, give me back my joy again. Don't keep looking at my sins—erase them from Your sight. Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Don't toss me aside, banished forever from Your presence. Don't take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me again the joy of Your salvation, and make me willing to obey You."
Third, Believe that God has indeed forgiven you and quit feeling guilty. It's in the Bible, Psalm 32:1-6, TLB. "What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record. There was a time when I wouldn't admit what a sinner I was. But my dishonesty made me miserable and filled my days with frustration. All day and all night Your hand was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water on a sunny day until I finally admitted all my sins to You and stopped trying to hide them. I said to myself, 'I will confess them to the Lord.' And You forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Now I say that each believer should confess his sins to God when he is aware of them, while there is time to be forgiven. Judgment will not touch him if he does. You are my hiding place from every storm of life; You even keep me from getting into trouble! You surround me with songs of victory."
God has a mate for you.
It's in the Bible, Genesis 2:18, TLB. "And the Lord God said, 'It isn't good for man to be alone; I will make a companion for him, a helper suited to his needs.'
Ask the Lord for a mate. It's in the Bible, Proverbs 19:14, TLB. "A father can give his sons homes and riches, but only the Lord can give them understanding wives."
God will give you your heart's desires. It's in the Bible, Psalm 37:4 and Matthew 6:8, TLB. "Be delighted with the Lord. Then He will give you all your heart's desires." "Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need before you ask Him!"

Strategies of Satan

Some of the strategies of Satan are suggested by his many names:

  • The devil (James 4:7). He slanders God to people. He slanders people to God. He slanders people to one another and to themselves.

  • The wicked one (Ephesians 6:16). He is out to harm people and create havoc in the natural, political, and social world.

  • The tempter (1 Thessalonians 3:5). He presents a false but appealing set of plausible reasons and advantages for sinning.

  • The god of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4). He is the supernatural motivation for the secular and religious systems of thought that oppose biblical truth.

  • The ruler of this world (John 12:31). Satan has great influence over unrighteous political systems. Totalitarian power, injustice, oppression, and greed are among his trademarks.

  • The prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2). He directs the activity of his army of fallen angels who conspire to tempt, deceive, and corrupt in a seemingly endless variety of ways.

At a personal level, Satan appeals to men and women 1) by urging that there is a better way than God's way in the immediate situation, 2) by reminding how often they have failed in the past at this point, 3) by insinuating how pleasant sin will be, 4) by promoting the merits of hatred, bitterness, and revenge, 5) by advocating power over love, and 6) by urging them to destroy their enemies.

To close this blog, I'll leave you with this suggestion...whenever Satan reminds you of your past, remind him of his future. (Matthew 25:41).

Romans

The Battle Within

For what I am doing, I do not understand.
For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
For I know that in me nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
